Document Description
CDFW is issuing a permit to BLM pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 2081(a) for a project to collect seed from three populations of Chinese Camp brodiaea, propagate seed and corms in the greenhouse, and introduce seed and corms into suitable habitat in the Red Hills ACEC, which is protected land managed by the BLM. Habitat and soils at the proposed introduction site are similar to those at the naturally occurring populations, which consist of a seasonally wet area on clay-derived serpentine soils. Seed will be collected in the summer of 2017, and will be germinated and bulked at the UC Botanical Garden. A portion of the seed will be placed into long-term conservation storage. In addition, corms will be grown and increased from the UC Botanical Garden's existing stock, or from corms obtained from Telos Rare Bulbs. Telos Rare Bulb's corms orginated from stock obtained from the UC Botanical Garden. Plants grown from corms will be evaluated for potential hybridization. After seed and corms are produced, which may take up to three years, they will be outplanted at the Red Hills ACEC. Corms will only be introduced to the Red Hills ACEC if they are pure Chinese Camp brodiaea and not hybrids. Introduction will occur in 2020 or 2021, and plants will be monitored for a minimum of seven years. Success of plants grown from seed and corms will be compared in the nursery. Success of plants grown from seeds and corms will also be compared at the introduction site if corms are outplanted.
