Document Description
During the winter of 2017, landslide debris within the hillside east of Fermont Hall on the Cal Poly campus became unstable. The debris encroached into Fremont Hall requiring the evacuation of the occupants. Migration of the landslide to provide an acceptable level of safety against future movement will require considerable design and construction.
The purpose of the work is to limit further hillside slippage possible during impending winter season, allowing for repairs to be made to the damaged residence hall, and development of long-term plans for hillside stabilization.

Notice of Exemption
Exempt Status
Emergency Project
Type, Section or Code
S: 21080b4, 15269bc
Reasons for Exemption
Section 15269,c, exempts specific actions necessary to prevent or mitigate an emergency, not including long-term projects undertaken for the purpose of preventing or mitigating a situation that has a low probability of occurrence in the short-term. The hillside winterization project is exempt because there is substantial evidence that the hillside is still moving, requiring action to be taken prior to the rain season.
A long-tern hillside stabilization plan will be pursued at a later date.
