Document Description
The Long Beach Municipal Urban Stormwater Treatment (LB-MUST) project will construct a centralized water treatment facility with an educational component, a brackish water 1- acre wetland, and with landscaped trails that lead to the California Coastal Trail in a community that is severely disadvantaged. The LB-MUST will remove approximately 32,220-square foot Malibu Ceramics Works industrial facility and approximately 87,800-square feet of pavement to construct a centralized water treatment facility and a 1-acre wetland. The byproduct of the centralized water treatment facility will be recycled to sustain the 1-acre of wetland. The wetland functions as a storage basin and provides additional water treatment such as water polishing. Additionally, the wetland provided a continuation of open green space with a trail between two existing City parks with a community that is severely disadvantaged. The trail connected the community to the California Coastal Trail via L.A. River Bicycle Path to expand community recreation and beach access. The City will incorporate an educational component to the project that integrated the connection between the water treatment facility operations and the wetland. The educational component is an interactive public recreation area for visitors and includes hands-on classroom opportunities, gallery exhibition for the treatment process, guides public educational tours of the treatment plant processes, and information on the low external impact development features.
