Document Description
The project proposes to renovate the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), which is located adjacent to the Scripps Memorial pier, west of La Jolla Shores Drive, and off of Discovery Way. The existing building consists of a 2-story concrete base and a wood framed 3rd level. Scope of work includes renovation of the 1st and 2nd levels of the building, and removal and replacement of the 3rd floor. The 3rd level is in a state of disrepair and needs to be rebuilt entirely. The total gross square footage (GSF) of the building is approximately 10,830 GSF, with an additional 750 GSF added to the 3rd level, which would be cantilevered to the east and west. The footprint of the existing building would not increase. Scope of work would also include updates to the electrical and plumbing systems, and the addition of an elevator to provide ADA access to each floor. Trenching would occur in the existing concrete driveway in order to update utilities. Work would also include modifications to the exterior of the building to repair and update the facade. Durable materials appropriate to the historic Scripps campus would be used. An updated exterior staircase would be installed on the south side of the building. Proposed modifications would bring the building up to current codes, including ADA access. The project would comply with the UC Sustainable Practices Policy and would achieve, at a minimum, LEED Silver rating. The renovated building would provide officers and support spaces for investigators, students and staff of the Integrative Oceanography Division. Occupants of the building would remain unchanged following construction.
