Document Description
Approx. 800 grade students from Humboldt County will travel by bus to the South Spit to participate in dune restoration activities to promote ocean conservation as part of a statewide event (Ocean Day). Prior to events, documents from Friends of the Dunes will visit participating classrooms to educate the students about dune ecology, restoration and logistics for the event. Upon arriving at the South Spit, students will be accompanied by a BLM staff person and Friends of Dunes docent to their school's plot to hand pull invasive European beach grass. Parking and restrooms will be located on Table Bluff Country Park. The County of Humboldt has issued a Special Event Permit. BLM and Friends of the Dunes will set up the site one day before the event and thoroughly clean up the area following the event. The general public is still allowed to visit the South Spit, beyond the immediate event area. Beach grass removal will occur on state lands, managed by BLM as part of a Conservation Easement south of Table Bluff County Park.
