Document Description
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE) is proposing the annual use of a dedicated site for periodic broadcast burning to facilitate fire control training under live-fire conditions. The proposed project area is approximately 170.5 acres in size and would rely on existing roads while constructing some control lines utilizing bulldozers and handline. This project proposes light and moderate intensity burning of native and nonnative annual grasses within designated burn blocks using handheld firing devices. Activities will include mobile attack, hand tool use, and progressive hose lay operation in a controlled environment. All driving of fire apparatus and other mechanized equipment will be confined to existing roads, which will be used as fire control lines. All burning will be performed according to the terms and conditions of a burn permit issued by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.

This project fits under portions of Class 4 S: 15304 - Minor Alterations to Land Categorical Exemption to CEQA. Field review by CAL FIRE staff confirmed that no exceptions apply that would preclude the use of a notice of exemption for this project. The Department has concluded that no significant environmental impact would occur to aesthetics, agriculture and forestland or timberland, air quality, biological resources, cultural resources, geology and soils, greenhouse gas emissions, hazards and hazardous materials, hydrology and water quality, land use planning, mineral resources, noise, population and housing, public services, recreation, transportation or traffic, or to utilities and service systems. Documentation of the environmental review completed by the Department is kept on file at CALFIRE's Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit Headquarters.
