Document Description
Establish an interpretive area adjacent to the new Visitor Center at Calaveras Big Trees State Park to enable Sierra Miwok women to give traditional cultural demonstrations for park visitors.
In a 20 x 24 ft. flat, shaded by secondary Incense Cedars and Ponderosa Pines, work will excavate a 10' x 12' by 4' deep depression to set the bedrock feature into the ground so that the surface is at grade level and appears natural. This proposed location is immediately east of an existing ADA-compliant Exterior Route of Travel from the new CBT Visitor Center to the Campfire Center, far enough from the entrance road and parking lot to be relatively free of disturbances, yet close enough to not be missed.
A second, smaller bedrock mortar feature will be moved to the mutually-agreed upon second location, an existing small clearing south of the North Grove trailhead, and may be used by Washoe descendants for non-destructive interpretive and traditional cultural uses.
Additional facilities such as unobtrusive interpretive signage, Park Rustic-compatible fencing, benches, and additional interpretive elements such as cedar bark dwelling and acorn granary replicas will be installed.
