Document Description
The purpose of this agreement is to fund the development, demonstration and characterization of a microplasma reactor array for efficient and controllable conversion of biogas to a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen (synthesis gas). The Recipient will build, demonstrate and characterize a reactor comprised of an array of microplasmas that will convert biogas (mixture of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2)) to a synthesis gas (mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2)) with controllable mole fractions of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The microplasma reactor is a non-thermal electricity-based technique that will provide a clean alternative to existing thermal technologies that are typically less efficient and involve combustion and hence emit greenhouse gases to produce the heat energy. The consumption of greenhouse gases (methane and carbon dioxide being the main constituents of biogas) is also beneficial to the environment.
