Document Description
The California Department of General Services (DGS) is performing work involving renovation of vacant office space on the 5th floor and break room on the 6th floor as well as correcting accessibility deficiencies in the 5th and 6th floor men's and women's restrooms. The office renovation consists of removing interior walls and doors and replacing to suit the new use. The reconfiguration of office space consists of private and open office space with modular furniture and hearing rooms. Walls, doors, lighting, switches, power, data, supply and return air will be installed to suit the new office space uses.

Reasons for Exemption
This exemption allows for the restoration or rehabilitation of deteriorated of damaged structures, facilities, or mechanical equipment to meet current standards of public health and safety, that involve negligible or no expansion of use beyond that existing at the time of the lead agency's determination. The Junipero Serra Building is listed on the California register of Historical Resources and is a contributing element within the Broadway Theater and Commercial Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Accordingly, DGS consulted with the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). Pursuant to public resources code section 5024(f), DGS received concurrence from SHPO that the project would not have substantial adverse change in the significance of a historical resource. Further the proposed project is not in an environmentally sensitive area, and none of the exceptions to this exemption are applicable. A the proposed project is being implemented to meet current standards of public health and safety, consisting of only minor interior alterations and no expansion of use beyond that existing at the time of this determination, the above noted exemption applies to this project.
