Document Description
DWR proposes to conduct land based geotechnical exploration and environmental surveys of the Sacramento Bypass and Lower Elkhorn Levee Setback project site in support of project planning and engineering design. Geotechnical exploration of the project site is needed to characterize the subsurface conditions in the area to further determine where and how a setback levee could feasibly be constructed. The proposed land based geotechnical exploration, which is expected to occur from May to October 2016 and 2017, includes pushing up to 500 cone penetration test (CPT) soundings and drilling up to 500 mud rotary/auger borings. The mud rotary/auger borings will be approximately 4 to 6 inches in diameter, and the CPT soundings will be approximately 2 inches in diameter. Both exploration types will reach depths of 50 to 100 feet below the existing ground surface. Environmental Surveys will consist of visual observations of existing biological and cultural resources in the project area. Data collected will be used for project planning and engineering design for the Sacramento Bypass and Lower Elkhorn Basin Levee Setback project.
