Initial Geotechnical Investigations for the California High Speed Rail Program, Bakersfield to Palmdale

The development of the Bakersfield to Palmdale Section of the California High Speed Rail Project will require the construction of new structures such as bridges, causeways, tunnels, drainage facilities, power distribution and other facilities necessary for the safe and efficient operation of the High Speed Rail System. The purpose of this initial phase of the geophysical investigation is to obtain information regarding subsurface conditions that could impact the design and construction of such structures (i.e., groundwater, hydrogeology, seismic conditions and surface water resources). The types of geotechnical investigations that may be conducted at each site will include soil characterization borings to a depth of up to 200 feet, cone penetration tests (CPTs), and installation of piezometers. Upon completion of the work, each site will be restored to its previous condition. All activities will be conducted within previously graded and disturbed areas of each site. Ungraded and/or vegetated areas of each site, or areas outside the existing public right-of-way, will not be disturbed. The necessary information is not available in published or private information and must be obtained specifically for this project in order to evaluate high speed rail alignment alternatives. The information gathered from these activities will assist the CHSRA in selecting alignments and developing systems that are safe, cost effective and have the minimum extent of environmental impacts.
