Document Description
The project involves a prehistoric hearth feature which is being destroyed by erosion and motor vehicle traffic and contains a high potential for data recovery. The hearth will be excavated to obtain samples for archaeological laboratory analysis. The project will be initiated by surveying and defining the site boundaries then performing background research to identify the possibility of any other potential archaeological sites in the project area. The project area is a 1x5 meter feature of dark soil eroding into a road bed. Although the actual depth of the deposit has not yet been determined, the exposed face of the feature indicates a depth of at least 1 meter.
Project conditions to avoid and/or minimize environmental impact shall be incorporated into this project. A copy of these requirements may be obtained by submitting a request to the project Environmental Coordinator listed below.

No potential for significant impact to the environment is anticipated in compliance with CEQA §15300.2. If the project is implemented as indicated within the project description including comments provided by CDPR specialists, then it is exempt under:
CEQA §15304 - Minor alterations to land and §15306 Information Collection as "minor trenching and backfilling where the surface is restored". (Class 4, Section 15304)
The action falls under the departmental list of exempt activities according to CEQA§15300.4 as: "Archaeological investigations by Department Staff." (Class 6, section 15306)
