Document Description
The Matilija Canyon Property Association is comprised of 131 dwellings located on private land in Matilija Canyon, CA. Sole access to the canyon is by way of Matilija Canyon Road, which is a two lane road flanked by heavy chaparral on the North Slope. The area has a rich fire history, with the latest fire occurring in July of 1985. The 122,000 acre Wheeler fire directly impacted the residents at the proposed project site with the loss of one structure and damage to several others. The area has recently been threatened in 2006 by the Day Fire and in 2007 by the Zaca II fire. Limited access and egress to the canyon along with increased fuel load and poor turnarounds for heavy equipment fire equipment justifies the need for the proposed Temporary Refuge Area Project.
