Document Description
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) will install a 125kWe generator that operates on waste heat from industrial driers at a fabric dying plant in Hawthorne, CA. The prime mover technology to be deployed is the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). ORC is similar to the steam-based Rankine cycle except that it uses organic working fluid in place of water to optimize performance at lower temperatures often encountered in heat recovery applications. The ORC unit to be place for this project is a self-contained unit approx. 113 inches x 50 inches x 80 inches high that will be placed on an appropriately sized concrete pad outside an existing building containing fabric dryers. Heat will be supplied to the ORC via an insulated hot water loop estimated to be about 80 feet in length, and which may be buried depending on the final configuration of the design. The condenser of the ORC is air cooled, so there will be no water required for pass through cooling. The balance of plant will consist of various instrumentation, compressors, and heat exchangers to capture the dryer waste heat for transfer to the ORC. The electricity generated by the ORC unit is intended to offset grid energy; although the unit will be interconnected to supply on-site energy, electricity export is not anticipated. Since the ORC is fueled by waste heat and will not result in any increase in air emissions, so new air permits are not anticipated. Minor grading and/or excavation and/or trenching at an already developed industrial site will be required for placement of the concrete and/or the underground pipe.
