Document Description
Caltrans proposes to replace the existing Lake Almanor spillway bridge (BR# 09-0044). To replace the existing Lake Almanor spillway bridge, a traffic detour will be required. This will be accomplished by constructing a temporary detour road a portion of the spillway's retaining wall (approx. 40 ft in length) located on the northeast side of the bridge will be removed down to the spillway floor. Earthen material would then be pushed out onto the spillway, from the adjacent parcel to serve as fill material for the paved detour road. Additional material, approx. 3,000 cubic yards, will be imported from an offsite location in order to construct the detour to current standards. The detour will provide 12 ft traffic lanes, while also providing access below the bridge for construction purposes. Once the access/detour road is constructed and traffic is re-routed, the existing bridge will be demolished and removed. All excess materials will be disposed of offsite at an approved disposal site. The new bridge will then be built on the current alignment and will be approx. the same length as the existing structure. However, the new bridge will be wider, with 12 feet lanes, 8 feet shoulders and a concrete barrier meeting current design and seismic standards. The total width will be approx. 43 ft wide. To support the new bridge, double column piers will be constructed atop spread footings. At bents two and four the spread footings will be approx. 12 ft wide by 12 ft in length and reach a depth of 4 feet. At bent three the spread footings will be larger at approx. 16 feet wide by 16 feet in length and 4 feet in depth. To support the abutments, 16 inch diameter Cast in Drilled Hole (CIDH) piles will be constructed. The bridge deck will then be constructed atop five precast bulb t girders. The bridge deck will consist of fiber reinforced concrete with epoxy coated deck reinforcement. A polyester concrete overlay will then be placed and the roadway will be striped and markers placed.
