Document Description
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is replacing an oak beam in the Old Firehouse at SQSP. The 8-inch by 20-inch oak girder is 29 feet long and supports the second floor front-end gable wall. The end of the cantilever beams show dry rot at the center-end of the beam as indicated by the softened wood and paint separation. The oak beam has deteriorated to the point that a medium to large size screwdriver can be pushed entirely into the beam. This project consists of replacing the oak girder with a Douglas fir beam, as Douglas fir is more resistant to the elements than oak.
