Document Description
The goal of the 2015 South Bay Nearshore-Shelf Exchange Study (IB15) is improved understanding of the exchange (dispersion and dilution) of tracers (e.g., pathogens, nutrients, larvae) between the land and offshore shelf region over about 10 km alongshore distances. Measurements of dye (a proxy for Nearshore tracers and contaminants) and oceanographic conditions (waves, currents, tides, salinity, temperature) obtained during controlled dye release experiments would be used to investigate the fate of shoreline introduced contaminants and improve numerical modeling capabilities of inner-shelf and surfzone exchange processes. The project site is the San Diego South Bay region between the U.S.-Mexico border to the south and the City of Coronado to the north. The site was chosen for its largely alongshore uniform bathymetry, history of water quality problems, and existing complementary observations. All traces of the experiment would be completely removed when the experiment is over.
