Document Description
The project would remove calcine pavements historically used as surface cover on trails, service roads (for purposes of this document, roads and trails shall be used interchangeably) and the access road to the San Francisco Open Cut in Almaden Quicksilver County Park that are identified as containing calcine pavements. The calcine paved roads and trails are largely concentrated around Mine Hill and include much of the Randol Trail, Castillero Trail, Yellow Kid Trail, April Trail, San Cristobal Mine Trail and portions of the Mine Hill Trail between the Hacienda park entrance and Bull Run, as well as a water service road and two unknown trails. These seven trails and three unnamed features make up the project area. The project would include removal of calcine pavements and replacement of removed material with clean soil; regrading of the trails; repair of inboard drainage ditches; stabilization of existing slumps and over steepened road edges; and revegetation and hydroseeding of disturbed areas. The project would also construct runoff collection swales along trails, and replace aging culverts to control erosion. The project would have a beneficial impact to the environment. Long term effects from removing calcine materials and repairing trails/roads to reduce and prevent erosion would be beneficial to the environment and water quality. Removal and disposal of mercury bearing calcine pavements would reduce mercury laden sediment that may be transported into the Guadalupe river watershed.
