Document Description
The Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-CFLHD), in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is proposing the replacement of the existing Guldotti Bridge, along Guldotti Road within the Fort Ord National Monument (FONM) in Monterey County, CA. The existing Guldotti Bridge configuration consists of an approximate 125-foot long, 3-span filled concrete spandrel arch structure that crosses El Toro Creek. The arches are supported by shallow spread footings which are exposed to the bottoms in isolated locations along the piers. Currently, the eastern/central arch provides the east bank of El Toro Creek; therefore, the existing bridge is failing due to scour and subsequent settlement of shallow spread footings. In addition the aforementioned scour and footing settlement, seismic activity may also be a cause of the degradation of the structure. FHWA-CFLHD is proposing to replace the existing Guldotti Bridge because it is structurally deficient; thereby, causing a safety concern for pedestrians, bicyclists and BLM maintenance vehicles, and its current configuration impedes the natural channel flow and floodplain of El Toro Creek. The FHWA-CFLHD is proposing the removal of the current structure and associated piers and footings, and replacement of a bridge within the current alignment footprint that is 350 sq. ft. less in impervious surface. The proposed replacement structure will consist of an approximate 16-foot wide, 100 foot long, single span structure. All of the equipment bridge components are proposed to be constructed above the 100-year flood plain and the bed and bank of El Toro Creek. riprap protection, which will be buried and planted with native species, as indicated below, surrounding the abutments is proposed to reduce scour and erosions during storm events. Maintaining the existing alignment is proposed in order to provide the shortest span length across El Toro Creek, which will eliminate permanent impacts to the channel and abutting wetlands, as well as reduce the impacts to the associated riparian areas.
