Document Description
This project will demonstrate an innovative and low-cost approach to utility-scale thermal energy storage (TES) that exceeds DOE cost goals and enables successful realization of California Energy Commission renewable energy targets. The innovation is the use of a system cost-optimal approach that employs a robust and low-cost thermal storage fluid, elemental sulfur, which enables overall low system costs, long lifetime, and scalability for a wide range of CSP applications and temperatures. An on-sun demonstration of this approach will be performed using Hyperlight Energy's CSP facility, which was developed with the support of the California Energy Commission's PIER program (Contract 500-10-063).
