Document Description
The project includes construction and operation of approximately 65 20-acre groundwater recharge basins (and related facilities and appurtenances including water control structures), on approximately 1,300 acres within a 4,000-acre study area of the Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District ("District"), and includes potential use of existing recharge basins within neighboring districts. The intention of the project is to increase the District's ability to capture and store available water supplies in the groundwater aquifer, including existing District contract Friant supplies including recovered account and re-circulated water supplies, USBR Section 215 supplies, Kern River flood flows and other available flood flows in the Friant Kern Canal, and other water supplies that may become available to the District from the Calloway Canal or other conveyance facility or means. Implementation of the Project will help balance groundwater use and create a sustainable supply for the District and its landowners, and help avoid the adverse economic and environmental burdens associated with groundwater level declines.
