Document Description
The LADWP proposes to construct a new dam, North Haiwee Dam No. 2, to the north of the existing North Haiwee Dam, which impounds the North Haiwee Reservoir. Seismic studies have found that NHD may fail during a max credible earthquake. NHD2 would serve to improve the seismic reliability of NHR in the event the existing dam is damaged or breached by an earthquake event, thereby ensuring public health and safety. Additionally, the project would maintain the function of an essential water conveyance infrastructure for the city of LA and protect local populations from a hazardous flooding event. The project would also create a basin between NHD2 and NHD, allowing LADWP to divert water from the LA Aqueduct, through the basin, and through a notch in NHD into NHR.
