Document Description
This project will produce observations of subsidence related to the Delta Island levee system with unprecedented detail in space and time. These observations will be focused on the most critical areas of the Delta's energy infrastructure, which involves natural gas pipelines and storage as well as electricity transmission lines. Initial surveying will occur at the Rio Vista Gas Field, followed by PG&E's McDonald Island Gas storage, and then systematic scanning of levees associated with gas pipelines. Sampling will take advantage of the mobile Platform's ease of deployment and ability to respond to quickly to emerging information. If investigators' findings or measurements made external to this project indicate that a particular region merits more detailed data acquisition, the sampling plan will be modified accordingly. Investigators will rely primarily on a Balloon-suspended LiDAR (B-LiDAR) mounted on a specially outfitted truck that is already in the USGS's possession. Bi-monthly surveys along levee crest roads will enable surveying a distance of approximately 1700 km of levee crests, with higher frequency surveys to explore high-priority infrastructure zones.
