Document Description
The Pilot Project proposes to apply a thin-layer of sediment over about 10 acres of existing salt marsh habitat on the Seal Beach NWR for the purpose of improving habitat quality in an area of the Refuge impacted by subsidence and sea level rise. In accordance with a five-year monitoring plan, the technique of thin-layer sediment augmentation will be evaluated to determine its effectiveness as a sea level rise adaptation strategy. The physical and ecological responses of the marsh to sediment augmentation will be documented and shared with other agencies and land managers interested in identifying options for conserving salt marsh habitat threatened by sea level rise along the California coast. Mitigation measures have been incorporated into the scope of the project.
