Document Description
DTSC has issued an Emergency Permit to NAS North Island located in San Diego, CA to treat hazardous waste by open detonation. The items to be treated are one (1) 3" projectile, nine (9) marine flares and one (1) flare kit. The items were discovered and recovered from both military and non-military sites and are current being stored at NAS North Island in an Explosive Ordnance and Disposal (EOD) safe holding area. The items will be transported to the Naval Air Facility (NAF) Bombing Range in El Centro, California where they will be treated by open detonation. Both transport and open detonation will be done following military protocols. NAS North Island EOD personnel have determined that the items are unstable and considered unsafe for continued storage. The NAF Bombing Range in El Centro has been chosen as the closest, safest, and most appropriate location for disposal. The Emergency Permit is effective from April 11, 2014 through July 9, 2014. Treatment is scheduled to occur within that timeframe. The treatment activities will be conducted by qualified EOD personnel. The detonation will be performed at the Naval Air Facility (NAF) in El Centro on an active EOD training area.
