On December 16, 1998, the U.S. EPA promulgated the Interim enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR) (63 Fed. Reg. 69478; amended Jan. 16, 2001 66 Fed. Reg. 3770), as required by the Safe Drinking Water Treatment Rule (SWTR) by providing increased public protection against microbial pathogens, specifically the protozoan Cryptosporidium.
