Document Description
The Shed C Channel Improvement Projects represent three components of the Shed C Channel Improvement Program (Program). The Program was identified in the City of Elk Grove’s Storm Drain Master Plan and was further explored in the City of Elk Grove’s Southeast Policy Area Drainage Study. The goal of the program is to modify the existing Shed C Channel to a multi-functional drainage corridor with enhanced natural stream and habitat values. The Shed C Channel Improvement Project – West Reach includes a low flow channel that meanders within a larger floodplain corridor providing flood storage and conveyance as well as an opportunity for the creation of wetlands habitat. The project is limited to the widening of the existing West Reach of Shed C Channel, the installation of two culvert crossings, the construction of two pedestrian steel truss bridges, and the construction of three detention basins. Preliminary grading at the detention basin locations may precede the construction of the basins and is not considered initiation of the project. The channel widening portion of the project includes grading of 0.25 miles to bring the channel to an approximate 235-foot full bank. The low flow channel will be approximately 42 feet wide and will meander through a 207-foot-wide overbank area. The Shed C Channel Improvement Project – East Reach includes a low flow channel that meanders within a larger floodplain corridor providing flood storage and conveyance as well as an opportunity for the creation of wetlands habitat. The project is limited to the widening of the existing East Reach of Shed C Channel, the installation of two culverts, the installation of a prefabricated steel truss bridge, and the construction of four detention basins. The channel widening portion of the project includes grading to bring the channel to a 140–170-foot full bank width, with 3:1 slopes. The low flow channel will be approximately 30 feet wide. 102 trees will be removed as part of this project. The Shed C Channel Improvement Project – Middle Reach includes a low flow channel that meanders within a larger floodplain corridor providing flood storage and conveyance as well as an opportunity for the creation of wetlands habitat. The project is limited to the widening of the existing Middle Reach of Shed C Channel and the installation of a box culvert. The channel widening portion of the project includes grading to bring the channel to an approximate 235-foot full bank width with approximately 3:1 slopes. The low flow channel will be approximately 42 feet wide. The project will tie into the eastern reach with a triple 10 foot by 5-foot box culvert.
