Document Description
The proposed project would enhance Buena Vista Lagoon through implementation of one of four alternatives: freshwater, saltwater, and two hybrid. Increasing sedimentation and urbanization upstream of the lagoon have decreased water depth and increased nutrient levels in the lagoon. Encroachment of vegetation into the open water basins of the lagoon has led to adverse water quality and vector problems as circulation decreases. Without enhancement, the lagoon is expected to become a vegetated freshwater marsh or riparian woodland-meadow within the next 30 to 50 years. Enhancement would increase biological and hydrological functions within the lagoon to address sedimentation and invasive vegetation encroachment, as well as declining coastal biodiversity, degrading water quality, water circulation restriction, and increasing vector concerns.
