Document Description
MarFac is the support and management centre for UCSD's fleet of oceanographic research vessels and platform. The site is divided into three parcels: the upland property belongs to The Regents of the University of CA, the northern submerged land parcel belongs to the State of CA, and the southern submerged land parcel belongs to the U.S. Department of the Navy. The University owns the pier, wharf, and all upland improvements. The original wharf and pier were constructed in 1965. Since then, few improvements have been made. Concrete and steel deficiencies in existing structures were first documented in 1983. In 2009, an inspection confirmed widespread degradation of the structures that compromise capacity, safety, and operational efficiency. For these reasons, the project proposes to remove/replace in kind the wharf, pier, and upgrade utilities.
