Document Description
The project consists of two components. The first component consists of performing experimental pollinations using plants on China Hill as the pollen recipients. Between 50 and 100 maternal plants will be used. Eight flowers per maternal plant will be tagged. Four flowers (per plant) will be emasculated before the flower opens (no prior pollinations). The other four tagged flowers will be emasculated after the flower opens (prior pollination). Two stigmas (one that received prior pollintation and one that did not) will be pollinated with pollen from a plant growing one meter away, two stigmas (one that received prior pollination and one that did not) will be pollinated with pollen from a plant growing 10 meters away, and two stigms (one that received prior pollination and one that did not) will be pollinated with pollen from a plant growing 100 meters away.
The second component of the project consists of collecting leaf material to determine the amount of genetic variation within and between populations of Phlox hirsuta. Twenty-five leaves will be collected from 36 indiciduals at each population.
