Document Description
Pier 70 is a 65-acre site that tells the story of San Francisco's shipbuilding and steel industry. The site includes a unique assemblage of historic buildings which were constructed between the 1850s and 1920s. The shipyard played a role in the rehabiliation and manufacturing of military vessels for the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. During World War II, Pier 70 was the largest US shipbuilder, employing 18,500 workers and building 52 warships.
