Document Description
The proposed project is to improve the safety of the southbound lanes from PM 20.3 to PM 22.3 by widening the southbound outside shoulders from five to ten feet wide, installing ground-in shoulder rumble strips, improving the Clear Recovery Zone (CRZ) by flattening the cut and fill of the slope on both sides of the southbound lanes, extending the southbound culverts and removing the large boulders within the southbound CRZ. The project will also involve widening the LA Aqueduct Bridge #48-15L where it crosses SR 39. As part of this work, the existing bridge will be extended by two ft to allow for a ten ft shoulder on the bridge. Existing culverts would be extended to match the new shoulder width and one new culvert would be added. This Major Amendment 1 adds desert tortoise to the list of Covered Species Subject to Take Authorization provided by the ITP. The project will result in impacts to 6.85 acres of Mohave ground squirrel and desert tortoise habitat. The project is expected to result in incidental take of Mohave ground squirrel and desert tortoise, which are designated as threatened species under CESA. The ITP referenced above as issued by CDFW authorizes incidental take of species listed under CESA that may occur as a result of project implementation.
