Document Description
The purpose of the contract is to demonstrate a practical, robust, and affordable technology to recover waste heat from one or more aluminum remelt furnaces which have hot exhaust gases containing corrosive elements such as chlorine and fluorine. Aluminum remelters typically operate at 30 percent efficiency with 60 percent of input energy lost to the exhaust gas without recovery. More than 5 million tons of aluminum are remelted annually in the U.S., and more than 10 percent of that total is remelted in California. A total of 20 trillion British termal units of natural gas are used to remelt aluminum annually in the United States.
