Document Description
UC Davis proposes to install and operate a renewable energy anaerobic digester (READ) at a site on County Road 98 in the west campus area of UC Davis. The proposed waste-to-renewable energy facility would accept agricultural waste, animal manure and bedding, food waste from the campus, process the waste in a biodigester, and use the biogas produced in the biodigester and the campus landfill gas to generate electricity in a microturbine. The organic component of MSW may contain contaminants such as plastics and metals, which would be separated out and properly disposed of, or recycled. The facility would involve five primary processes: (1) material receiving and preparation; (2) anaerobic digestion; (3) refinement of biogas; (4) generation of electricity using biogas and landfill gas; and (5) effluent treatment to process and dispose of any solid or liquid byproducts of the process. The READ facility would be built in two phases. The Phase I facility would be designed and constructed to process up to 25 tons per day of organic wastes. Phase 2 would expand the facility to handle up to 50 tons of organic wastes per day.
