Document Description
The San Joaquin River Restoration Program's (Program) goal reintroducing Chinook salmon to the San Joaquin River (SJR) below Friant Dam will require the movement of out-of-basin juvenile salmon or salmon eggs into the SJR. Juveniles may be held within in-stream holding pens to stimulate imprinting on SJR water and reduce straying rates. The California Department of Fish and Game (Department) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will undertake a study to practice in-stream rearing techniques with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) as a surrogate for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). This study will provide the Program with experience and information on in-stream rearing techniques, including appropriate fish density, pen design, and feeding methods.
