Document Description
The Monarch Grove Management Plan provides guidelines for the maintenance and replacement of trees within this historical wintering site of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus L.). The grove consists primarily of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and several Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and Monterey pine (Pinus radiate). These trees provide roosting and wind protection during the months of November and February. Willows (Salix lasiolepsis) found along the Meadow Creek, border the western and northern boundaries of monarch grove are also included in this management plan. The willows provide a wind buffer/thermal blanket for the monarchs.
Approximately 15 willow stakes and 15 willow plants will be planted to enhance/fill-in the established willows found along the Meadow Creek trail and also replace several dying non-native Myoporum shrubs found in the North Beach Campground campsites just adjacent to the creek.
