RD 1601 proposes to construct levee improvements along the south side of Twitchell Island to increase the levee's resistance to erosion, provide additional freeboard for an estimated wave-run up of 4.7 feet, and provide better overall levee stability. Improvements would include ~5 mile of new foundation berm and setback levee behind and attached to the existing levee along the San Joaquin River except in front of the existing pump station, a sheet-pile wall would be installed so that the pump station, sump, and appurtenant discharge pipes would not have to be moved. Borrow materials to construct the improvements, including engineered fill, drain rock, and aggregate base would be obtained from commercially available sources likely within 50-60 miles. Some material would likely be transported to the site by truck and some by barge.
