In 2011, the City of Alameda entered into an agreement with the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) to operate and maintain ferry services to Oakland and San Francisco from the existing ferry terminal at 2900 Main Street. In addition to providing regular ferry service, WETA's mission includes ensuring the ability to provide emergency-period lifeline transportation in the event that land-based transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels) are temporarily unavailable.
