Document Description
A CUP to allow a land-based art project (Museum - Section 19.53.030) in a PL RS (Platted Lands - Residential Suburban Combining) District. The proposal is a land-based art project known as the Terminal Project. As proposed, the artist intends to bury an intact Boeing 727 commercial jetliner 38 feet beneath the ground surface of the Mojave Desert. The plane would be accessed by an underground tunnel that connects to a parking area 420 feet east of the plane. All engines, jet fuel, and potentially hazardous materials would be removed from the plane. New electrical, plumbing, and air exchange ventilation systems would be incorporated into the plane. Once buried, the artist intends to restore the natural surface vegetation above the airplane to create the appearance of undisturbed desert. There would be no external structures, lighting, or signage.
