Document Description
The City of Santa Ana proposes to improve the current athletic field facilities located at Willard Intermediate School. The proposed improvements will not change the capacity of the athletic field, or significantly alter its current use. The improvements will provide the opportunity for an increase in the amount of hours that the field may be used by introducing field lighting that will allow evening play. Improvements consists of installing a synthetic turf multi-purpose track and field, which will include sports lighting, construction of outdoor community exercise equipment and a children's play area with restrooms, replacement of basketball courts, and installation of a decorative fence around the new facilities. The proposed project does not include the construction of any seating facilities or the installation of bleachers. The track will be used for school physical education uses during school hours, and will serve as a jogging track for community use outside of school hours. The soccer field is, and will continue to be used by community soccer leagues outside of school hours. The field will be used by community soccer leagues after school hours up until 10 p.m. on weekdays. Soccer games will also be held on weekends. All games hosted at the field will terminate by 10 p.m. in compliance with City of Santa Ana Municipal Code requirements. It is anticipated that the majority of people who will be attending the soccer games will arrive on foot, based on the current conditions. Parking for those who will be using vehicles as their means of transportation to the games will be available on the school grounds via a joint use agreement with the District, and along the streets surrounding the school. Three outdoor basketball courts will be constructed as part of the project. The basketball courts will be provided on a first come first serve basis. The City proposes to provide the courts for casual recreational use and not for use by community leagues. The tot lot and exercise equipment area will be completely fenced, and no access to the school will be provided. The tot lot will be open to the public both during and after school hours. Construction activities related to the athletic field improvements are anticipated to begin in June 2012 and continue through December 2012.
