Document Description
The Inyo National proposes to authorize helicopter landings by the CDFG within designated wilderness areas for the purposes of population monitoring and translocation of endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep. This action is needed to meet recovery actions established in the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Recovery Plan (hereafter, Recovery Plan, USDI 2007a). Recovery of this unique subspecies depends on gathering information on habitat use and demographic rates that determine population dynamics through the placement of Very High Frequency and Global Positioning System collars on individual bighorn sheep, as well as augmenting populations of bighorn sheep and introducing animals into currently unoccupied portions of their historic range. These actions require the use of a helicopter in capturing and transport efforts.
