This project would accelerate the closure process for abandoned mines in the immediate proximity of designated OHV routes in the Bakersfield and Bishop Field Office areas. Acceleration would consists of four parts: (1) Thirty-three four-season pre-closure surveys of bats resident at abandoned mine portals that pose a hazard to the health and safety of OHV riders and an analysis of the impact, disturbance, and adverse effects of the closure project. (2) A closure recommentation for each portal that accommodates seasonal uses by BLM sensitive bat species and maintains the mine's historic resources. (3) Effectiveness monitoring of 48 AML sites that have bat-compatibale closures installed to ensure that people are effectively excluded from mines and bats are occupying the habitat. (4) A report of biological findings and closure recommendations for the BLM. THe BLM would share the findings with Bat Conservation International, the California Department of Conservation, and the OHMVR Division.
