Document Description
The project involves exploratory excavation to determine the depth of fill lying over archaeological remains within the existing cellular telephone facility at Gaviota State Park. This preliminary investigation is intended to gather information needed to complete the final design for construction of a new cellular installation. Applied EarthWorks,Inc. (AE) a subcontractor to GTI, will excavate a pair of narrow (18-24"wide) crossing trenches within the existing facility to determine the depth of fill and what lies beneath it. Trenches will each be approximately 20 feet long and will be excavated with a backhoe, under the direction of an archaeologist who will document the depth of fill, make profile drawings of the trench walls, describe the nature of content of sediments, and collect samples if necessary. Trenches are expected to extend 24-30 inches deep to reach the maximum estimated depth of fill; they will not penetrate into undisturbed archeological deposits. All tranches will be backfilled after documentation, the project area is currently developed with building, concrete pads, and other facilities; the current ground surface is covered with gravel and lacks vegetation.
