Document Description
The project is a study of wood decomposition on Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF). JDSF is one of approximately nine sites throughout the United States. Wood decomposition will be measured on an approximately 80 m x 50 m plot where approximately 48 pieces of loblolly pine up to 2m in length will be placed in both vertical and horizontal arrangements. Additional redwood pieces, approximately 10-30 cm (12 in) in diameter, may be cut on site and added to the study, increasing the study by approximately 50%. Vertical installations will be placed on a PVC stand and secured by cables attached to earth anchors. Sensors and data loggers, powered by batteries and solar panels, will be placed on logs and in the soil up to 15 cm (6 in) in depth. A soil sample of approximately 200g (7 oz) will be taken from the location of each vertical log at depth of 0-5 cm (2 in). Site samples include 10 surface litter samples and a 50 cm (20 in) soil horizon sample. Clear surface debris for path into site.
