Document Description
The Department of Toxic Substance Control has issued an Emergency Permit to U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms (MCAGCC) to treat hazardous waste by open detonation. The items to be treated are military munitions, such as flares and green smoke canisters. The items were found at a residence in Twentynine Palms, California and reported by the Provost Marshall and San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. MCAGCC Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel have determined that the items are considered unsafe for shipment or indefinite storage. The emergency permit is effective from July 15, 2011. Treatment will be schedule depending on weather, logistics, and availability of personnel. The treatment activities will be conducted by qualified personnel from MCAGCC. The denotation will be performed on MCAGCC EOD Range 051. As MCAGCC does not have a permit for treatment of hazardous waste at this location, DTSC has determined that an emergency permit should be issued. The items are potential safety hazards and present an unacceptable risk for continued storage. There is no alternative treatment available.
