Document Description
The proposed project is an extension of an existing recreational pedestrian trail from Asilomar State Beach across two private properties located at 1400 and 1500 Sunset Drive, Pacific Grove, on an easement held by the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District. The proposed project was a condition of approval by the CA Coastal Commission as part of the development of the single family residences at 1400 and 1500 Sunset Dr. The Project is located in the Coastal Zone, and lies within the Asilomar coastal dunes. The trail will extend for a distance of approximately 225 feet from Monterey Peninsula Regional Parks District (MPRPD) property through two private residential lots along a ten to fifteen-foot-wide trail easement. The private residences through which the trail easement passes include Miller/Wilde (APN 007-021-006-000) and Johnson (APN 007-021-014-000). The trail project will reduce safety concerns by connecting the trail away from Sunset Avenue so that trail users do not have to enter the street in order to access the remainder of the existing trail. The trail will terminate in the north at an existing unimproved use trail on City and Pacific Grove property within the Point Pinos Lighthouse Reservation, near the intersection of Sunset Drive and Lighthouse Avenue. Construction of the proposed new section of pedestrian trail will remove existing native dune scrub along approximately 80 to 90 feet of its length. This scrub is invaded in some places by ice plant and non-native annual grasses. The remaining length of the trail will pass through disturbed areas on the Miller/Wilde and Johnson properties and ice plant on the City of Pacific Grove property.
