Document Description
The MWCPWD proposes to excavate approximately 8,183 linear feet (0.79 acre) of wetlands and waters of the U.S. and State, resulting in removal of approximately 2,597 cubic yards of sediment. Operating from the road or top of bank, an excavator would remove accumulated sediment from these channels and drainage ditches. A small dozer would be placed in the Second Valley, First Valley and Lewis Gulch creek channels to facilitate sediment removal. Temporary cofferdams would be used at 7 creek channels to isolate the work area and protect water quality and aquatic resources. Excavation of sediment will result in the temporary loss of freshwater and saltwater marsh vegetation and removal of about 84 riparian trees (willows and alders approximately 2-12 inches in diameter). These habitats support the following listed threatened and endangered species that potentially occur in the project area: CA black rail, CA clapper rail, CA red-legged frog, coho salmon and steelhead trout. MCDPW will emphasize avoidance of impacts to biological resources and water quality through the use of specific and general measures and provide in-kind replacement of removed riparian trees over 6 inches in trunk diameter.
