Document Description
Develop and implement a multiyear maintenance plan for a historic apple orchard at Palomar Mountain State Park, in accordance with Orchard Inventory, Stabilization, and Preservation Maintenance tasks as defined by the National Park Service (Fruitful Legacy, Susan Dolan, National Park Service, 2009). Tasks to be completed will include:
* Remove encroaching vegetation and debris; remove dead wood; complete needed irrigation repairs for restoration trees; repair tree cavities where possible; use paint to prevent sun scald where necessary; water sprouts and suckers; provide protection from wildlife such as deer.
& Complete winter and summer pruning in accordance with ANSI and University of California Extension Tree Pruning Standards and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Landscapes, apply dormant oil spray if needed, manage ground cover to less than 6 inches height, apply nutritional mulch, monitor for serious pests and diseases and treat if exceed acceptable infestations, thin fruit during "June Drop," harvest fruit when appropriate, maintain irrigation on restoration varieties until not needed, continue propagation of historic trees with scions on rootstock, conserve live wood for germplasm.
