Document Description
The project consists of removal of an existing steep and poorly drained 1.25 mile portion of the Whit Oaks Trail in Monte Bello Open Space Preserve and replacement with a new 0.9 mile main trail and a new 1 mile connector trail through grassland and mixed evergreen forest. The purpose of the trail rehabilitation is to correct erosion and sedimentation problems associated with the existing trail, move the trail off a disc line, and create a new trail that provides a more scenic, safe and enjoyable recreational connection between the preserve's main parking lot and trail network. The new trail design will incorporate best management practices for controlling erosion, be constructed at an average 10% gradient using small earth-moving equipment, will not cross any creeks, will not remove any large trees, and will direct traffic away from a culturally significant area. The decommissioned portion of the existing trail will be restored to natural conditions.
