Document Description
Dead oyster shells (and perhaps ceramic tiles, as a surrogate for oyster shells) will be placed at the mudflat as a substrate for natural, passive recruitment and growth of new oysters, as a test of the potential to restore oyster beds to Newport Bay. Twenty-five, 2m X 2m replicate plots, with 2m gaps, will receive scattered or bagged oyster shells, and preference for oyster spat settling will be observed. Anticipated recruited fauna included native Ostrea lurida (Olympia oyster) and exotic Crassostrea gigas (Japanese oyster), both known to exist in Upper and Lower Newport Bay. The study will test the potential for a larger-scale effort to increase the density of O. lurida in Newport Bay, while restoring native oyster "beds" and associated ecology after historical loss. The potential for a larger scale effort will be tested.
